Meet Barney,

This handsome, happy boy is full of personality and always ready to brighten your day. Barney is an adaptable guy who would thrive in just about any household, but he’s best suited for experienced owners who can keep up with his curious, excitable nature. He’s a social butterfly who loves meeting new people and making friends, and his playful energy makes him an excellent choice for active individuals or families.

Now, let’s talk about Barney’s unique charm - he’s smart, but… sometimes he forgets this and instead channels his inner porkchop. One moment he’s learning a new trick in record time, and the next, he’s doing something so ridiculous that you’ll question if he has a potato in place of a brain. He’s confident, silly, and always entertaining - a true lovable idiot in the best way possible. If you’re looking for a fun-loving, happy, and loyal dog who will keep you laughing (and keep you moving), Barney is the one for you!

Ideal Home: Barney is suitable to live in a townhouse, standalone home or on a farm/acerage, with a medium to large yard & high, secure fencing.

Family: Barney is open to meet kids from 8 years old & up. Reason for this is simply because Barney can be a little boisterous during play time and may unintentionally knock over smaller kids.

Barney is fine being on his own, but he would love being inside with his new family. Barney is fine to live with people who work full-time hours.

Furry Friends: Barney is best to be the only dog in the home. Despite being able to walk past dogs without any issues, Barney is not interested in making/having dog friends & this was evident in his dog assessment.

As we cannot test, we are unsure how Barney would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.

Training & Development:
Barney would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. When Barney meets you, he likes to say hello by jumping up to be closer to you, while it's not too bad, we are working with Barney to correct this behaviour.

Barney is still learning his name, but he knows commands such as: sit & down. Barney is very food motivated and is known to be gentle when taking treats from you - so, having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea.

We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.

Play: Barney has mid-range energy needs - sometimes he gets the zoomies, and sometimes he's very chilled out - he would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins a day to keep him happy. Barney shows interest in playing with toys - he enjoys stuffed toys but only when he is also engaged in personal play with his handlers.

Barney walks well on lead, but he can pull on occasion. He is best to be walked on a martingale

Staff Comments:
Barney is a good fit for any home and a good fit for people who have experience with owning dogs. Barney is a fun dog that can be a little unsure at first but he blossoms into a vibrant dog in a matter of minutes. He's very sweet & tries his best to make you happy & proud.

Post Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
