Meet Freckles, a sweet but misunderstood guy...

About: Freckles is a friendly boy who may come off quite anxious at first. In his kennel he is nervous, on alert & may either shy away from you or appear cranky with you – but his kennel behaviour is quite different to what you see when he is out & interacting with people. His kennel behaviour is indicative of a dog that is fearful because he lacks confidence.

When out of the kennel Freckles is friendly, happy, and excited. He becomes very playful and engaging with his handlers, although he does have a stubborn streak (which we kind of love to be honest…) & can be quite cheeky (which we also love!) Freckles is super smart despite his puppy like behaviour.

Freckles is best suited to an owner who has owned dogs before, someone who is confident with dogs that need a little extra TLC. Freckles is best suited to a calm & quiet home as loud noises & the ‘unknown’ tend to scare him.

Ideal Home: Freckles is best suited to a house or a farm/acreage with a large yard & high secure fencing.

As Freckles loves spending time with people it would be great for him to be able to spend time with his new family inside the home.

Family: Freckles is open to meet kids from the age of 15 years & up. This is due to his timidity and fear reactivity. It is very important to note that his fear reactivity is not evident when confident people or staff handle him. He is the type of dog that draws from his handler. So if you are confident then so is he!

Freckles is suitable for people who work part-time hours, the only reason for this is that the additional time at home can be used for training. He would also be fine for full-time workers just as long as they are committed to his ongoing training.

Furry Friends: Freckles is open to meet other dogs. During his dog assessment Freckles was playful & very at ease and relaxed. He was also very respectful to the other dog & very calm despite being a puppy. Freckles was a 10/10 good boy.

Freckles has high prey drive, and because of this he is not suitable to live with cats or pocket pets.

Training & Development: Freckles would benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience, group classes to assist with his social skills around other dog & one on one with a pro to cover confidence building techniques. As mentioned before Freckles is fear reactive; he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, but his first instinct is to bark. New things & new people scare him but he is able to build trust as long as he is with a handler he knows/trusts. With confidence training & building Freckles is the type of dog that could go to a dog friendly café or social setting.

Freckles is still learning his name but knows ‘sit’, ‘shake’, ‘down’, ‘stay’, ‘come’ & ‘on your bed’ – again if he has worked with you then these commands come easily, if he is still learning to trust you, he may be a little more stubborn, but when he's comfy for you he can be a little cheeky. Freckles is also learning how to take treats gently from your hand & has come a long way from where he was. When excited freckles may jump up on you, but he is smart enough that he is learning that this behaviour is not favourable.

We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.

PlayFreckles energy needs are high, and he would benefit from exercise, walks or play from 20-60mins per day. Freckles walks ok on a lead, with some pulling & he is best walked on a martingale.

Freckles loves all toys, especially soft/plush toys.

Staff Comments: Freckles does not enjoy meeting new people however with a confident handler & treats he is able to overcome his fear. Freckles will need professional training to assist him on his journey & confidence building. Freckles has not been exposed to much, so new things scare him. With an experienced & confident owner he will be able to overcome his initial fear response.

Post Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
