Meet Keira,

About: Keira is a sweet, gentle & friendly girl. She can be sensitive at times, especially around unfamiliar people/objects - but having said that she warms up quickly to the unknown. She is an affectionate girl who has a lot of love to give if given the chance. Keira was living rough before coming into our facility. She had been roaming for quite a few weeks, so it's understandable that she came in with a few behavioural kinks. She was been able to work through most of them, but she is best suited to a confident & experienced owner who is willing to continue to work with her. She loves to engage in training sessions, which is typical of her breed.

Keira is best to live in a calm & quiet household due to her sensitivity to loud noises. She would also be a great fit for active people too, as she loves to explore & is a lovely dog to walk, too.

Ideal Home: Keira is best suited to live in a standalone house or a farm/acerage, with a large yard & high, secure fencing.

Keira is the kind of dog that could spend most of her time indoors, but when her family is home she would love the opportunity to be inside with them, too. She thrives being around the people that she loves.

Family: Keira is open to meet kids from 8 years & up - reason for this is due to her timidity. Older kids will be more understanding of her need for space & allow her time to decompress.

Keira is suitable to live with people who work part-time hours.

Furry Friends: Keira is best to be the only dog in the home. During her dog assessment it became clear very quickly that she doesn't want a dog friend.

As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Keira would go living with cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owner. Having said this, being a Kelpie X, she may have high prey drive which is a breed specific trait.

Training & Development: Keira would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience.

Keira is still learning her name, but she knows commands such as 'sit', 'down', loose leash walking basics & is toilet trained. She has great focus & loves to work & engage in training. Keira is food motivated, and when she does take treats from you, she does so gently. Having treats on you during training sessions to mark good behaviour would be a great thing to do, too.

We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.

Play: Keira has mid-range energy, and would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins per day to keep her content. Keira isn't too interested in playing with toys, she prefers to explore & sniff the environment, or personal play with her handlers.

Keira walks well with minimal pulling & she knows loose leash walking basics. She is fine to be walked with a collar & lead or on a harness.

Staff Comments: Keira is a very affectionate & sweet girl. She had a rough life before coming into our facility & she needs a confident & experienced home to socialise & train her. She is food motivated & willing to learn. She loves a good, old fashioned cuddle too.

Post Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
