Meet Sonny,

If you're looking for a happy, friendly, and all-around lovable pup, look no further - Sonny is the one for you! This super sweet boy is ready to bring sunshine into your life, whether you're a first-time dog owner or a seasoned pet lover.

Sonny is an adaptable little guy who can thrive in just about any home. Whether your household is calm and cozy or full of energy and excitement, Sonny will fit right in! He’s the perfect match for active individuals or families who love to explore, because Sonny is always up for an adventure! Or, if you're the type of people who prefer to be indoors, maybe watching a movie or reading your favourite book, Sonny is also known to give the best cuddles in town!

While Sonny is a social butterfly, he can be a little shy when meeting new people. But don’t worry— - it won’t take long for him to warm up and show you his affectionate, playful side. Once he feels comfortable, he’s full of love, tail wags, and sweet puppy kisses! Sonny is young, engaging, and eager to find his forever family. Could that be you?

Ideal Home: Sonny is suitable to live in a townhouse, standalone home or on a farm/acerage, with a medium to large yard & high, secure fencing.

Family: Sonny is open to meet kids of any age, but families with young children should be aware that he is a playful puppy and may unintentionally knock over small kids during playtime.

Sonny is suitable to live with people who work full-time hours. Sonny is perfectly capable of spending long hours alone, but when his family is home, he would love the chance to be indoors with them, as he enjoys being around people.

Furry Friends: Sonny is dog selective. Sonny is naturally a shy dog, though he does have moments of confidence. During his dog assessment, he showed submissive behaviours, rolling over whenever he felt overwhelmed. To ensure his comfort, Sonny would do well as the only dog in the home but if he were to live with another dog, it should be a calm and gentle companion who respects his boundaries.

As we cannot test, we are unsure how Sonny would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.

Training & Development: Sonny would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Since Sonny is selective with other dogs, attending group classes can provide a controlled environment for him to meet other dogs and further develop his social skills. Sonny may jump on you for reassurance, or a cuddle - we are working with him on this.

With time to settle & ongoing training, Sonny has the potential to be the type of dog that you could take to a dog friend café or social setting.

Sonny is still learning his name, but he knows commands such as: sit, bed (place), and down. He is smart & is trainable. He is food motivated and is known to be very gentle when taking treats from you, so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea.

We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.

Play: Sonny has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 20-60mins every day to keep him healthy & content. Sonny loves to play with soft toys, you'll often see him carrying one in his mouth on his walks.

Sonny walks well with minimal pulling but he needs encouragement. He's quite shy when the walk starts, but his confidence builds as does his happiness as the adventure goes on. He is best to be walked in a harness.

Staff Comments:
Sonny is a very sweet dog who is affectionate and loving. He just lacks confidence with new things/people/dogs. He will need further training for his confidence but he will reward you with the softest cuddles, sweet little licks, a genuine love for soft toys & a face that will make your heart melt.

Post Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
