Meet Waffles,
About: Waffles is a bit of a class clown, but we love that about him. Although he is big, he is quite placid once he settles. When you first meet him, you’ll see that he has a larger-than-life attitude, is quite excitable, playful & boisterous. So, he is best suited to experienced owners.
Waffles is suitable for any home environment and would be a great dog to take out on adventures as he’s honestly such a fun dog to be around. He loves to interact, explore & make friends.
Ideal Home: Waffles is best suited to live in a house or on a farm/acreage, who a medium to large yard & high secure fencing.
Access to inside the home would be ideal so that Waffles has be with his family. But he would also be quite happy outside most of the time too.
Family: Waffles is open to meet kids from 10 years & up. Reason for this is that with his boisterous, energetic nature, comes jumping. Smaller, or less dog savvy kids, may get accidentally knocked over during play time.
Waffles is fine to live with people who work part-time. He really likes being around people more so than not.
Furry Friends: Waffles is open to meet other dogs. During his dog assessment he was super interested to meet & make friends, but it became clear that he is under socialised. He simply doesn’t know how to interact appropriately, but he LOVES to play. He would be best suited to another dog that isn’t as energetic as he is, as he tends to cater his play style to the other dog.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Waffles would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Waffles would also benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience as well as group classes to assist with manners with other dogs.
Waffles is still learning his name, but he knows how to ‘sit’ & ‘down’. Waffles responds well with a confident & firm command/order. He will jump up for attention, but we are working with him on this.
Waffles is food motivated, so having treats on hand to reward him during training sessions would great. He does take treats gently too.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Waffles has high-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins a day to keep him content & happy. Waffles likes toys, we are not sure which one is his favourite though.
Waffles walks well on a lead, but he is strong, so he will pull. He is best walked on a martingale & loose leash training should be apart of his training.
Staff Comments: Waffles is a big doofus. He can handle a lot and during his dog assessment accidentally got hit in the face & he thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. We are working on harnessing his excitement & transferring it into something more productive.
Post Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
