Dog and Cat Registrations
All cats and dogs, other than exempt cats and dogs, must be microchipped and then registered in NSW under the Companion Animals Act, 1998 Section 9 (2) and 10 by 3 months of age.
You are encouraged to have your cat or dog desexed before registering it. An additional fee is required for dogs not desexed by 6 months of age and annual permits are required for cats not desexed by 4 months of age.
Microchipping
To register your pet, it must first be microchipped by a vet or authorised identifier. The Companion Animals Act requires cats and dogs to be positively and permanently identified from 12 weeks of age or before they are sold or given away.
This identification is in the form of a microchip, the size of a grain of rice that is implanted under your pet's skin. Each microchip has a unique 15-digit number that can be read with a scanner, like a barcode.
Your local vet or animal shelter will microchip your pet and add its number to the NSW Pet Registry website and issue you with a Certificate of Identification.
Registering your pet
All pet cats and dogs in NSW must be registered on the NSW Pet registry either by 12 weeks of age or immediately upon transfer (whichever happens first). Until payment is made, your pet is not registered and you may be liable for fines. A late payment fee will also be applied if you do not pay registration within 28 days of when it was due.

Registrations can be completed online via the NSW Pet Registry.
Once a profile has been created on the NSW Pet Registry you can make payment for your lifetime registration fees online.
