Outdoor dining
What is outdoor dining?
The revitalisation and activation of our city centre is a priority. We know that outdoor dining can stimulate business growth while at the same time enhancing our streets and creating a lively, vibrant destination for our community and visitors.
To support businesses with applying for an outdoor dining permit, we've created a new, simple online application and renewal process.
How to start outdoor dining
To help you apply for your outdoor dining permit, we've created an Outdoor Dining Guidelines document. This document walks you through the requirements for outdoor dining step by step. Sample diagrams and checklists make the information easy to understand.
Read the Outdoor Dining Guidelines(PDF, 2MB)
Once you've read through these guidelines, you'll be ready to apply for outdoor dining at your business and contribute towards making our city centres more vibrant and activated.

Smoking restrictions for outdoor dining
Smoking is banned in commercial outdoor dining areas. Smoking is also banned in any location that is within 4 metres of a pedestrian access point to a club, hotel, restaurant or café.
NSW Health is the regulatory authority for enforcing the smoking bans, and NSW Health's authorised inspectors will monitor smoke-free outdoor areas, investigate complaints and issue cautions or penalty notices to people observed smoking in smoke free areas.
On the spot fines of $300 may apply to offenders. In addition, business owners may be fined up to $5,500 for any detected offences.
Please refer to the Smoke-free Guide(PDF, 556KB) for commercial outdoor dining areas.
