Slug Factory

Located on Queen Street

Inspired by Campbelltown CBD’s wavy street furniture, affectionately referred to as ‘the slugs’, artist Andrew Christie conceived a series of creature companions who climb, rest, and hide among their concrete counterparts.

Growing up as a queer person in Campbelltown, Christie draws on his lived experience and the desire for more inclusive spaces, where LGBTQIA+ people can see themselves reflected within the public spaces of their city. Members of the community were asked to contributed to the project by sharing stories, which have been incorporated into the project in the form of engraved plaques and online essays.

More than just playful and curious markers along the street, the slugs proudly affirm their right to occupy space as the odd or the “other”. Some sit proudly in plain view, while others elude passersby.

This project was produced by Andrew Christie for Wander On Q, 2024. It was commissioned by Campbelltown City Council and funded by NSW Government, with special thanks to the collaborators and allies who generously shared their stories.
