People with Disability Information

We believe that diversity is something that makes Campbelltown a great place to live and work. The contributions that people with disability make to our local community are something that we value and want to support.

In partnership with the community and service providers, we aim to eliminate disability discrimination where possible with a proactive commitment to improving access for people with a wide range of disabilities.

An accessible community provides opportunities for everyone to access transport, community spaces and systems, as well as political, cultural, corporate, and social life. It is a place where people feel safe, respected, and able to live good lives.

Facts and Statistics

  • The 2018 Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers (SDAC) estimated that 4.4 million Australians, or 17.7% of the population, had a disability.
  • SDAC defines disability as any limitation, restriction or impairment which restricts everyday activities and has lasted, or is likely to last, for at least six months.
  • Disability can impact on a person's opportunities to participate in the labour force. People aged between 15 and 64 years with disability have both lower labour force participation (53%) than people without disability (84%).
  • In 2018, 2.5 million Australians with disability (living in households) needed assistance with at least one activity of daily life, most commonly health care, property maintenance or cognitive and emotional tasks.
  • Carers play a critical role in supporting people living with disability. In 2018, almost 2.65 million Australians were carers (10.8%), with 861,600 people (3.5 per cent) aged 15 years and over identified as primary carers.
