Demerit Points Scheme and Double Demerit Points
Demerit Points Scheme
The Demerit Points Scheme is a national program involving the allocation of penalty points (demerits) for a range of driving offences.
The scheme is designed to encourage safe and responsible driving. Working in conjunction with financial penalties, demerit points provide a strong incentive to drive within the law.
A full list of fines and demerit points are available on the Transport for NSW website. You can also check the demerit point balance on your drivers licence at the Service NSW website.
Double Demerit Points
Double Demerit points apply during public holiday periods. This is when substantial numbers of motorists will be on the road which has significant road safety implications.
Offences that attract double demerit points are:
- Mobile Phone offences
- Speeding offences
- Seat Belt and Child Restraint offences
- Motorcycle Helmet offences
We promote Double Demerit periods on our website and via electronic message boards in the local area. The NSW Government also promote these periods through media outlets and the Transport for NSW website. For more information visit the Centre for Road Safety Double Demerits website.
Double Demerit Points apply to the following periods in 2024
* On Thursday 28 March and Friday 7 June 2024, school zones are in operation. Additional penalties can apply for certain offences committed in school zones.
